CPI(M) Holds Protest Rally In Dharmanagar Demanding Cancellation Of SIR And Resignation Of Chief Election Commissioner.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 3rd of October, 2026 : The Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Committee of the CPI(M) organised a protest rally in Dharmanagar on Saturday (3rd October, 2026), alleging that the names of eligible voters were being deleted from the electoral rolls and demanding the protection of democratic rights.

The rally began at 4 p.m. from in front of the Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Office. It passed through Rajbari, Central Road, Purba Bazar and DNV Road before returning to the Sub-Divisional Office, where it concluded. A significant number of party leaders, workers and supporters participated in the rally.

Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) State Secretariat member Amitabha Dutta questioned the role of the Election Commission. He alleged that the names of a large number of eligible voters were being deleted in the name of electoral-roll revision, thereby affecting people’s right to vote.Dutta claimed that the names of many people who had voted in the 2024 Lok Sabha election were subsequently removed from the electoral rolls. He alleged that in areas where the SIR process had been implemented, the names of eligible voters were being deliberately deleted.He further alleged that attempts were being made to weaken the democratic system by using the Election Commission. He also appealed to the general public to join protests in defence of voting rights.

The protesters demanded the immediate cancellation of the SIR process, the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and legal action against him.Besides Amitabha Dutta, CPI(M) State Committee members Durgesh Roy and Bijita Nath, Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Secretary Ratan Roy, MLA Islam Uddin, and leaders, workers and supporters from various levels of the party were present at the programme.
