Teliamura, Tripura, 3rd of October, 2026 : The blocked public road in Chhankhala, adjoining South Ghilatali Gram Panchayat under Kalyanpur Block, was finally restored after the sub-divisional administration stepped in and took firm action. The bamboo fencing obstructing the road was removed, reopening the route for local residents.
According to local residents, TRPC Chairperson Patal Kanya Jamatia owns land and a garden in the hilly area between Watilong and Chhankhala. It is alleged that recently, someone damaged and tore down the net fencing around the boundary of her garden. Following the incident, the only brick-paved road used by the general public, which had been constructed by the panchayat, was allegedly blocked with a bamboo fence.
As a result, the movement of farmers and local residents from the South Ghilatali area had been severely affected for the past several weeks. The situation escalated when a JCB machine was brought onto the blocked road and excavation work was allegedly started for constructing a drain. Seeing the only access route to their agricultural fields and for daily commuting being damaged, villagers gathered at the spot, strongly protested and prevented the work from proceeding.

According to allegations made by local residents, during the incident, Patal Kanya Jamatia’s husband, B. P. Meena, a native of Rajasthan and reportedly an IAS officer, allegedly approached the villagers while holding a stick. The residents further alleged that he referred to local Indian residents as “Bangladeshis,” triggering strong resentment in the area.
The incident reportedly led to widespread anger among residents, who questioned how an outsider could allegedly threaten ordinary villagers while invoking his position as an IAS officer and whether the influence of his wife’s position as an administrative chairperson was being used in the matter.
After receiving the information, personnel from Kalyanpur Police Station and Haripada Sarkar, DCM representing the Teliamura Sub-Divisional Administration, promptly reached the spot. As the situation became tense, the DCM and police officials held prolonged discussions and arguments with Patal Kanya Jamatia’s husband.
The villagers put forward a single demand—the immediate restoration of the only road used for their daily movement. Eventually, following the villagers’ demand, the sub-divisional administration took firm action. As directed by the administration, the portions of the road where pits had been dug using the JCB were immediately filled, and the bamboo fencing that had remained in the middle of the road for several weeks was completely removed, reopening the route for public use.

Local residents and farmers expressed relief over the prompt intervention of the sub-divisional administration. However, with the aim of finding a permanent solution to the issue, a joint tripartite meeting has been scheduled for next Tuesday at the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, with representatives of the villagers and Patal Kanya Jamatia expected to attend.
The administration’s intervention, particularly its decision to restore public access to the road amid the dispute, has been widely appreciated by residents of South Ghilatali and Chhankhala.
