Agartala, Tripura, 8th of October, 2026 : The State Government has decided to give free sugar, flour (maida) and semolina (suji) to 9 lakh 92 thousand ration consumers in the state on the occasion of the upcoming Durga Puja. The decision was taken at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting. Every ration cardholder will receive 1 kg of sugar, 2 kg of flour and 500 grams of semolina free of cost. Distribution will begin in mid-October, that is, between Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja.
Briefing the press at the Secretariat on Wednesday (7th October, 2026) on the important decisions of yesterday’s Cabinet, Sushanta Chowdhury, Minister for Food and Tourism, shared this news. He said the special allocation was made to stand by the common people during the festive season. Under this programme, a total of 243 metric tonnes of semolina, 1,984 metric tonnes of flour and 992 metric tonnes of sugar will be distributed. This will cost the state government Rs 9.35 crore to Rs 9.85 crore.
Speaking about other key Cabinet decisions, the minister said that to strengthen the state’s education system and create more job opportunities for youth, it was decided to recruit 1,061 teachers. Of these, 700 Graduate Teachers will be appointed for Classes 9 and 10 under the Secondary Education Department. Another 361 teachers will be recruited under the Elementary Education Department, comprising 75 Graduate Teachers and 286 Undergraduate Teachers.

The minister said that, to make urban services stronger and more effective, it was decided to fill 213 posts of various categories in the Agartala Municipal Corporation under the Urban Development Department. These include technical, administrative and service-related posts. He expressed hope that this would improve the corporation’s capacity and the efficiency of civic services. He also said the Cabinet decided to set up a “Tripura Staff Selection Commission” to make recruitment across government departments faster, more transparent and better organised. The commission will conduct recruitment exams and staff selection for Group-B, Group-C and Group-D posts under the State Government.
In addition, the sitting allowance for the chairman and members of the Welfare Sub-Committee under the Scheduled Caste Welfare Department has been raised from Rs 100 to Rs 200 per meeting. On minority welfare, the daily boarding house stipend for students living in residential boarding houses has been increased from Rs 65 to Rs 100. He also said it was decided to fill 8 vacant Lower Division Clerk posts under the Science, Technology and Environment Department.
