Agartala, Tripura, 10th of October, 2026 : The present State Government, recognising the indispensable role of the media, has continued its multifaceted development initiatives to improve standards at every level of the media sector and ensure the professional security and welfare of journalists. To ensure the effective dissemination of information on various issues of public interest through the media, the state Cabinet recently approved the second amendment to the Tripura Advertisement Policy, 2021. Secretary of Information and Cultural Affairs Department Kiran Gitte stated this at a press conference held today at the Press Conference Hall of the State Secretariat.

A Media Advisory Committee, chaired by the Chief Minister and comprising eminent members associated with the state’s media industry, was formed to advise the government on various issues affecting the media. As part of this process, an Advertisement Subcommittee was constituted following the committee’s decisions to undertake an in-depth examination of advertisement-related matters and recommend appropriate modifications. The revised provisions have been formulated in light of the subcommittee’s recommendations, proposals and detailed deliberations.

Information and Cultural Affairs Department Secretary Kiran Gitte stated that under the revised advertisement policy, an Advertisement Subcommittee comprising representatives of the media will be constituted to provide recommendations on various advertisement-related matters, replacing the earlier Empowered Advertisement Committee.

The amendment also introduces changes to the categorisation of enlisted print, television and web media. Instead of the existing A-1, A, B and C categories, enlisted media houses will be classified into three categories — Large, Medium and Small — across print, television and web media. In addition, a new category named “Tabloid” has been introduced for small-sized daily and weekly newspapers.

He also stated that various provisions concerning media categorisation have been revised, including the methods of classification, the basis for categorisation and the mandatory conditions to be fulfilled. Factors such as the circulation and coverage of media organisations, the duration of their publication, the strength of their journalistic workforce and their infrastructural facilities have been given due consideration. The revised framework also places significant importance on the quality and standards maintained by media outlets.

He also highlighted that media houses falling under the Large category and having the highest circulation or coverage would be given priority in advertisement allocation across print, television and web media. The Secretary added that the amendment aims to support the effective communication of public-interest information through a wide range of media outlets, irrespective of whether they are newly established or have been operating for years. The revised policy has been placed on the department’s official website so that all concerned can access the updated guidelines.

At the press conference, Secretary Kiran Gitte also highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the state government for the welfare of media professionals, including the accreditation policy, pension policy and workshops aimed at enhancing journalists’ professional skills and competence. He further mentioned the government’s plans to introduce a fresh distribution of press jackets and press stickers for journalists in the near future. Director of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, Bimbisar Bhattacharya, was also present at the press conference.
