Agartala, Tripura, 31st of October, 2026 : A 33-year-old woman from Karbook in South Tripura district, identified as Smt. Shefali Tripura, wife of Burbaray Tripura, had been bedridden for the past year due to an aggressive Giant Cell Tumour (GCT) affecting her left knee.
After receiving initial medical attention at Tripura Medical College, Hapania, she was referred to the Atal Bihari Regional Cancer Centre for preliminary tests. Subsequently, she was referred to AGMC and GBP Hospital, where doctors conducted a detailed assessment before admitting her to the Orthopaedic Joint Replacement Department on October 10, 2026.
On October 15, 2026, the medical team successfully carried out a complex surgery that lasted around three hours. The operation included the resection of a 10 × 8 cm tumour and tibial replacement with a megaprosthesis. The entire procedure was conducted free of charge following special approval from the concerned government department. The patient is recovering satisfactorily.
The successful surgery was led by Joint Replacement Surgeon Dr. Sayantan Saha, along with Dr. Swarup Sarkar. The surgical team also included Dr. Anupam Debnath, Dr. Dipen Roy and Dr. Abhishek Majumder.

The anaesthesiology team comprised Dr. Bhaskar Majumder, Dr. Indrajit Das and Dr. Joydeep Debnath. The concerned OT nurses and OT assistants also played an important role in the successful completion of the procedure.
Such surgeries are rare in Tripura and patients are generally referred to major hospitals in metropolitan cities or Tata Memorial Hospital for treatment. The cost of undergoing this procedure at a private hospital would typically be around ₹5–6 lakh.
Under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), the woman underwent the complex surgery completely free of cost. She was kept under close medical observation following the operation and, after her condition improved satisfactorily, was discharged from GBP Hospital on October 21, 2026.
