Agartala, Tripura, 17th of May 2025 : Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Union Secretary, Department of Fisheries, MoFAH&D, along with Shri Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary (Inland), Department of Fisheries, MoFAH&D, visited Basundhara Matsya Hatchery at Nalchar Block, Sonamura, Sepahijala District, Tripura established under PMMSY to review the progress so far on 17th May 2025. Following the visit the Union Secretary also interacted with fishermen and fish farmers to understand the gaps and challenges faced by them on ground.

The Basundhara Matsya Hatchery has been set up under PMMSY with project cost of ₹25 lakhs and now caters to the requirement of more than 200 fish farmers by supplying quality fish seed of various species, including Rohu, Catla, Mrigal, Bata, Puntius, Grass Carp, Silver Carp, and Bighead Carp. The unit currently generates an annual turnover of ₹32 Lakhs with annual income of approximately ₹17 lakhs. It is expected to significantly boost local fish production, providing a reliable source of quality fish seeds to farmers in Tripura. This initiative not only aims to increase the income of local fish farmers but also to promote responsible fishing practices that align with environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the hatchery will serve as a training hub for farmers, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to optimize their aquaculture practices and improve their livelihoods.

Hatcheries play a critical role in ensuring the availability of quality seed, which is fundamental to enhancing fish production and productivity. Recognizing it’s importance, the Department has prioritized the establishment and strengthening of hatcheries across the country to support species diversification, promote aquaculture practices, and meet the growing demand for fish seed. A total of 986 hatcheries have been approved with a total investment of ₹280 crore under PMMSY. These hatcheries are expected to produce 3,600 crore seeds (fry) collectively.

In tandem with above, recognizing the fish production potential of the northeastern states, the Department of Fisheries has implemented various initiatives over the past decade to improve the availability of quality seeds throughout the northeastern region. In order to address the infrastructure requirement of quality seeds, 248 hatcheries have been established in the north-eastern states with a total investment of ₹ 65.2 crore. Out of the total, around 43 hatcheries have been established in Tripura itself, contributing significantly to the state’s seed production capacity and supporting the growth of sustainable aquaculture.
These efforts will not only enhance fish production but also create job opportunities both direct and indirect, stimulate the local economy, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the aquaculture industry in the region.
