Agartala, Tripura, 16th of November, 2025 : With the initiative of Journalists Association of Tripura observed National Press Day 2025 at Ambassa Circuit House under Dhalai district in Tripura on Sunday (16th November, 2025).
National Press Day (16 November) marks the establishment of the Press Council of India in 1966 under the Indian Press Council Act, 1965. Since 16th November 1966, National Press Day has been observed. The 1965 Act was later repealed in 1975, and a new Act, was subsequently enacted. Under this new legislation, the Press Council of India was reconstituted in 1979. Established as an independent body, the PCI’s primary role is to ensure that the press maintains high standards of journalism while remaining free from external influences. The idea for the Council was first proposed by the First Press Commission in 1956, which emphasized the need to protect press freedom and promote ethical reporting.
Today, along with the rest of the country, the state committee of the journalists organization, the Journalists Association of Tripura, also observes this National Press Day with due respect and dignity. The programme began in the presence of journalists from various districts across Tripura.
The event was graced by former eminent journalist and current teacher Lakshman Deb as the chief guest, along with Ambassa Municipal Council Vice-Chairman Gopal Sutradhar, senior and distinguished journalists Kripesh Ghosh, Kajal Deb, President of the Journalists’ Association of Tripura State Committee Bikram Karmakar, General Secretary Mithun Acharjee, Bikash Das, Assistant Secretary Satyajay Majumder, and others. The presence of journalists from different districts made the National Press Day programme lively and vibrant. Woman journalist from Unakoti district, Ruma Chakma, was also present at the National Press Day event.
