Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament-2026 To Be Held On January 9 At Umakanta Stadium.

Agartala, Tripura, 8th of January, 2026 : A four-day-long Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament 2026 will begin tomorrow (9th January, 2026) at Umakanta Mini Stadium. The tournament will kick off at 2:00 PM tomorrow. The slogan of this year’s football tournament is “Kick for Health, Play for Pride.”

A total of 16 teams comprising boys and girls from eight districts will participate in the tournament said Secretary, Tribal Welfare Department, Govt. of Tripura Dr. K. Sasikumar state that at press conference held at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel on Thursday (8th January, 2026). The Secretary also formally unveiled the attractive trophies of the competition.

The Secretary of the Tribal Welfare Department said that the tournament is being organized among the state’s tribal hostels to improve the quality of education of tribal students and to foster a spirit of competitiveness among them.

“This year, a total of 316 teams from tribal boys’ and girls’ hostels across the state participated in the subdivision-level competitions. Of these, 196 were boys’ teams and 120 were girls’ teams. At the district level, 46 teams took part, including 23 girls’ teams and 23 boys’ teams. In the state-level tournament starting tomorrow, 16 teams from eight districts will participate.Of these, eight will be girls’ teams and eight will be boys’ teams. The Secretary said that a total of 16 matches will be played in the state-level tournament, including the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.” Secretary of the TWD added.

The Secretary of the Tribal Welfare Department state that In terms of prizes, the champion team will receive a beautiful trophy along with ₹1 lakh. The first runners-up team will get a trophy and ₹75,000, while the second runners-up team will receive a trophy and ₹50,000. The Fair Play Award-winning team will be awarded a trophy and ₹25,000. The Best Player of the tournament will receive a trophy and ₹10,000, the Highest Goal Scorer will get a trophy and ₹10,000, and the Best Goalkeeper will also be awarded a trophy and ₹10,000. In addition, the Best Player of each match will be given a trophy along with a cash prize of ₹1,000.

At the press conference, the Secretary said that various sports infrastructures are being developed under the initiative of the Tribal Welfare Department to encourage tribal youth to take up sports. Two synthetic football grounds have been constructed at Deorachhara in Unakoti district and Gomati district. Work is also underway to build another synthetic football ground at Mungiakami in Khowai district.

The Secretary also added that the Birsa Munda Football Tournament is not just a competition, but a platform that provides students living in various hostels with an opportunity to showcase their talent, build self-confidence, strengthen the spirit of unity among them, and aspire towards higher goals. He also appealed to everyone to come and enjoy every match being held at Umakanta Stadium.
