Khowai, Tripura, 10th of January, 2026 : Allegations of irregularities and corruption have surfaced in the road construction work at Chebri Peknichhara under Khowai Subdivision. Locals have expressed strong dissatisfaction, alleging the use of substandard materials and completion of the work without proper carpeting.

According to the report, nearly three km. of road at Chebri Peknichhara were damaged and broken. Subsequently, the repair work was sanctioned at an estimated cost of around ₹4.19 crore. Although the project included metalling, carpeting, and all other required works, the contractor is allegedly carrying out extremely substandard work in complete violation of norms, wasting lakhs of rupees. Low-quality work is being done by simply laying a coat of bitumen over the old pitch.

Meanwhile, the project also included the construction of boulder protection along the roadside. However, serious questions have been raised about the quality of those boulders as well, with allegations that very inferior-quality boulders are being used.

Local residents have also expressed dissatisfaction over the drainage work that was included along with the road construction. Although the engineer was supposed to be present at the site during the construction to supervise the entire road work, he was not found there; instead, two other individuals were present in his place.

Interacting with media, when questioned today about the quality of the road as well as the overall execution of the project, they failed to give any satisfactory answers.

According to the residents, if the road is constructed in this manner, it will be completely damaged within a few months. Some locals lamented that the previous road was in better condition than the newly constructed one.

Sources say that the contractor is completely unconcerned, as he allegedly enjoys protection from influential quarters. It is alleged that even before the work began, a large amount of “commission” had already reached various levels, from the top to government officials. It is worth mentioning that wherever engineer Amit Das goes to inspect work, allegations repeatedly surface against him of compromising construction quality in collusion with contractors. The next report with complete and clear details will be published very soon.
