A New Horizon For The Silk Industry In North Tripura.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 16th of May 2026 : With government support, rural communities are moving toward self-reliance through mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing. Under the Hurua Cluster of the Sericulture Department in North Tripura district, a new possibility has emerged around mulberry farming and the silk industry in the Bargul Amtilla area under Kalachhara Block.

Under the Central Government’s “Silk Samagra-2” project, several modern silkworm rearing houses have been constructed in the area, creating great enthusiasm among local silk farmers. The government spent ₹1,66,500 on the construction of each rearing house, while the total estimated cost of a project stands at around ₹1.85 lakh. The project for the financial year 2024–25 has been implemented by D.H.H.S.According to local residents, this initiative is not limited to the construction of buildings alone; rather, it has opened a new path toward rural economic growth and self-reliance.

Out of a total of 50 beneficiaries under the Hurua Cluster, 30 are currently active mulberry cultivators who are earning their livelihood through silk farming with government assistance.Ranjit Matsya Das, Field Officer and Cluster In-Charge of the Hurua Cluster, stated that the government provides various training programs to mulberry farmers along with necessary equipment free of cost. He said, “The government is continuously working to expand the silk industry in rural areas. Initiatives have been taken to increase production and farmers’ income through modern training methods.”A mulberry farmer from Ward No. 1 of Bargul village said that by regularly cultivating mulberry and rearing silkworms, it is possible to earn around ₹80,000 to ₹1 lakh annually. As a result, many families are gradually becoming financially self-reliant.

According to local people, the tireless efforts and supervision of Field Officer Ranjit Matsya Das have given fresh momentum to the silk industry in the Bargul area under the Hurua Cluster. With government assistance, training, and infrastructural development, everyone is hopeful that this initiative will further strengthen the rural economy of North Tripura in the coming days.
