Sabroom, Tripura, 6th of October, 2026 : A disturbing incident of alleged brutality has come to light in the Dolbari Harinatila area of Sabroom subdivision, where a young man was reportedly detained overnight on suspicion of stealing rubber and subjected to severe physical assault. The injured youth has been identified as Sushanta Debnath, a resident of Ward No. 1 of Netaji Palli in Dumduma. A video of the alleged incident, in which the victim was reportedly subjected to prolonged assault through the night, has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread concern and tension in the area.
According to local sources and the allegations received, some residents reportedly detained Sushanta Debnath last night on suspicion that he had entered a house in the Dolbari Harinatila area with the intention of stealing rubber. However, eyewitnesses and Sushanta’s family members claimed that he was not directly seen stealing anything. They further alleged that no stolen goods or rubber were recovered from his possession during a subsequent search.
Based solely on suspicion, the youth was reportedly subjected to repeated physical assault from around 2:00 AM until approximately 5:00 AM. It is alleged that he sustained serious injuries, including fractures to his hands and legs, during the assault. Upon receiving information at around 5:00 AM, police from Sabroom Police Station promptly reached the spot and rescued him in a bloodied and critically injured condition before taking him to Sabroom Hospital. As his condition deteriorated and was considered serious, the attending doctors referred him to Tepania Hospital in Udaipur for advanced treatment.

On the other hand, a section of local residents claimed that Sushanta is allegedly addicted to drugs and would often roam around the area with the intention of committing thefts to obtain money to support his addiction.
Meanwhile, a section of concerned local residents and members of the community have raised questions about the decision of some locals to take the law into their own hands. They said that if Sushanta had indeed committed a crime or theft, he could have been handed over to the police, as the country has an established legal and judicial system. They further argued that subjecting a young man to an overnight assault and allegedly breaking his hands and legs instead of following due legal procedures cannot be considered acceptable in a civilised society.
The youth is currently undergoing treatment at Tepania Hospital in Udaipur, and his condition is reportedly critical. Police from Sabroom Police Station have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining the viral video footage to identify those allegedly involved in the assault.
