Sabroom, Tripura, 29th of October, 2026 : Sumita Banik had dreamt of building a happy family, bound by the hopes and traditions of married life. However, within just 1 year and 4 months of marriage, that dream has turned into a nightmare. Sumita, a resident of Mohanpur in Sidhai, has now been forced to live like a stranger in her own home. Allegedly subjected to inhuman torture by her husband, Subrata Banik, and mother-in-law, Swapna Das Banik, the housewife has reached a point of utter helplessness. Serious allegations have been levelled against the family of forcibly administering medication to her, allegedly resulting in the termination of two unborn children simply because she became pregnant.

The incident, which took place in Ward No. 2 of Godowntilla, Damdama, has sparked widespread tension and outrage in the locality. According to local residents, although everything was normal during the initial days of the marriage, Sumita allegedly began facing continuous mental and physical harassment thereafter.

It is further alleged that under the pretext of the Puja holidays, she was sent to her parental home, after which the main gate of her in-laws’ house was locked, preventing her from returning. After spending several days at the Loknath Ashram in Sabroom, she finally approached her husband’s house demanding justice and her rightful place. However, when she arrived, her mother-in-law allegedly remained inside, keeping the iron gate firmly locked and refusing to let her enter.

Despite several mediation meetings held at the Panchayat and local levels, neither her husband, Subrata, nor her mother-in-law, Swapna Devi, has reportedly shown any willingness to resolve the matter. Instead, allegations have emerged that Sumita is being subjected to extreme deprivation and left without food, pushing her into severe hardship and suffering.

The incident has also raised serious concerns among socially conscious residents, who are questioning how ordinary women can feel safe if such alleged abuse takes place within the household of an ASHA worker. The question of women’s safety and protection has now become a matter of growing concern in the locality.

The victim is now left waiting for justice under the open sky. Local residents and women in the area have made a united appeal to the administration to take immediate and stringent legal action against the alleged cruelty and ensure that Sumita receives the dignity she deserves, along with proper rehabilitation in her matrimonial home.
