Kolkata, West Bengal, 29th of October, 2026 : Filmmaker Abhinay Deo’s Doosra, which released in cinemas on October 23, continues to garner appreciation from audiences for its compelling storytelling and its distinctive blend of Indian cricketing history with a deeply personal tale of self-discovery. Actor Anil Kapoor and cricket icon Rohit Sharma have applauded the film’s trailer, expressing admiration for its evocative portrayal of one of Indian cricket’s most unforgettable moments.
Set against the backdrop of India’s iconic 2002 NatWest Final victory over England, Doosra reimagines the cultural impact of former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly’s now-legendary shirt-waving celebration from the Lord’s balcony. The film uses this defining moment in Indian sporting history as a catalyst for an intimate story of courage, individuality and self-discovery.

At its heart is Tara, a young girl growing up in a conservative household, struggling to find her place in a world governed by conventions. An outsider in her own surroundings, Tara begins to question the expectations imposed upon her. Watching Ganguly’s audacious celebration on television inspires her to discover her own voice and find the courage to challenge the status quo, irrespective of the consequences.
Anil Kapoor, who was moved by the trailer’s seamless interplay between reality and fiction, said, “I loved the trailer and how Abhinay has managed to blend two different worlds – reality and fiction seamlessly. I still remember the euphoria of the iconic win at the Natwest Series, that was truly unprecedented. It gave an entire generation the belief that India could win anywhere, against anyone. I’m really looking forward to watching the film.”
Rohit Sharma, who was 15 when India won the 2002 NatWest Final, also expressed his appreciation for the trailer, recalling the extraordinary significance of the victory. “I was 15 when India won the 2002 NatWest Final… what a moment! Not only the comeback but the team’s confidence! The film Doosra beautifully captures why the moment was more than just winning a match. Just saw the trailer and looking forward to watching the film!!” he said.
Director Abhinay Deo describes Doosra as an uplifting story about a nation finding its voice and a young girl discovering her own. Moving beyond the conventional idea of freedom, the film explores emotional liberation from deeply entrenched social norms and expectations, offering a contemporary perspective on the courage it takes to question established conventions.

Producer Masha Sajdeh said, “We are thrilled to finally bring Doosra to the big screen. It is a story about all of us, and each of us. We hope audiences will be entertained, moved and inspired to question long-held conventions.”
Produced by Masha Sajdeh and Rohan Sajdeh, with Neeta Shah as co-producer, Doosra features a story and screenplay by Agnello Oswin Dias and an original score by Ram Sampat. The film stars Plabita Borthakur, Ankur Vikal, Samidha Guru, Tvisha Seema and Krishna Gokani.
Now playing in cinemas, Doosra brings together the nostalgia of a landmark moment in Indian cricket and a timeless story of personal freedom, inviting audiences to revisit a sporting triumph that inspired a generation while reflecting on the courage to stand up for one’s own beliefs.
