Dharmanagar, Tripura, 27th of February, 2026 : A daring attempt at snatching in broad daylight created panic in Dharmanagar, the district headquarters of North Tripura. However, due to the prompt action of local residents, the accused failed to escape. A youth was caught red-handed while attempting to snatch a bag of cash from a small businesswoman. According to police sources, the detained youth has been identified as Joseph Reang (son of late Rongmaham Reang), a resident of Bongsul area under Damchhara Police Station in North District.As per reports, on Friday morning, Shipra Rani Debnath, a small trader, was sitting in front of her shop at the Old Motor Stand area in Dharmanagar.

Suddenly, the accused allegedly snatched her bag containing cash and tried to flee. Hearing her cries for help, nearby shopkeepers and locals immediately gathered and chased down the accused, eventually catching him. Although the bag was recovered, Shipra Rani Debnath alleged that approximately ₹3,000 kept inside was missing. Locals searched the accused but the missing cash was not found. However, a large number of syringes were recovered from his possession.During preliminary interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed that he used to sell the syringes to drug addicts.Police from Dharmanagar Police Station quickly reached the spot after receiving information and detained the accused for further investigation. Efforts are underway to recover the missing money.
Residents of the town have expressed concern over the recent rise in incidents of mobile phone, chain, and bag snatching. Many believe that the alarming spread of drug abuse in the region is a key factor behind such crimes. As the number of drug-dependent youths reportedly increases in North District, incidents of theft and snatching are also on the rise.While the saying goes, “Hate the sin, not the sinner,” the growing number of youths falling into the trap of addiction has raised serious questions about the role of the administration. Concerned citizens are demanding stricter surveillance and effective rehabilitation programs to address the issue.
