Attempted Theft Of Government Textbooks Foiled; One Person Caught By Night Guard.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 7th of July 2026 : An attempted theft at the government textbook warehouse under the Office of the Inspector of Schools in Dharmanagar was foiled by the alertness of the night guard late Monday night. A man identified as Mithun Das, a resident of Teliamura in Khowai district, was caught red-handed while allegedly trying to steal government textbooks.

According to night guard Raju Baspar, he heard suspicious noises coming from the warehouse at around 2:00 a.m. on Monday. Upon reaching the spot, he found the accused removing textbooks from the warehouse and piling them up near the boundary wall. Realizing that a theft was in progress, he immediately overpowered the suspect and informed the authorities of the Inspector of Schools’ office. On Tuesday morning, the accused was handed over to the Dharmanagar Police.

During initial interrogation, the accused claimed that he had mistakenly entered the warehouse while under the influence of intoxicants. He also stated that he collects discarded bottles in the East Bazar area of Dharmanagar. However, during further questioning, he reportedly admitted that he had entered the warehouse with the intention of stealing the books.The Inspector of Schools stated that discrepancies had been noticed for some time between the recorded inventory and the actual stock of textbooks in the warehouse. Following the latest incident, officials suspect that repeated thefts may have been responsible for the shortage. He described the incident as a matter of serious concern, especially since it occurred at a government office located in a prominent part of the town.

After receiving the information, Dharmanagar Police reached the scene, took the accused into custody, and initiated an investigation.It is noteworthy that incidents of theft have increased in Dharmanagar in recent months, affecting government offices, commercial establishments, and residential areas alike. Complaints involving the theft of AC pipes, electrical wires, and other valuable items have surfaced repeatedly. Although CCTV footage has been available in several cases, many suspects remain unidentified, raising public concern over law and order and the overall security situation in the town.
