BJP Sweeps Dharmanagar By-Election With Massive Margin.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 4th of May 2026 : As scheduled, counting for the by-election to the 56- Dharmanagar constituency in North District began at 8 AM on Monday, May 4, at PM Shri Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School. Despite continuous rainfall since early morning, the enthusiasm of party workers and supporters outside the counting center was clearly visible.

The administration ensured strict security arrangements, with surveillance maintained across a 100-meter radius to prevent any untoward incidents. The counting process was conducted in the presence of Returning Officer Debjani Chowdhury, District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, and several other officials. A total of 14 tables were used for EVM counting, along with one table for postal ballots. The entire process was completed peacefully under a three-tier security system.

Candidates from all major political parties were present at the counting center.The main contest in this by-election was between BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty, Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharya, and CPI(M) candidate Amitabh Dutta. From the very first round, BJP’s Johar Chakraborty took a strong lead. In the first round, he secured 5,674 votes, while the Congress candidate received 2,473 and the CPI(M) candidate 1,113 votes. By the end of the second round, Chakraborty’s total rose to 12,669 votes, which further increased to 18,472 in the third round.

After the fourth round, his tally reached 24,009 votes, putting him far ahead of his rivals. Meanwhile, a close contest was observed between Congress and CPI(M) for the second position.In the postal ballot count, CPI(M) secured 44 votes, Congress got 33, and BJP received 282 votes. Other candidates, including Bibhas Ranjan Das (Amra Bangali), Sanjoy Chowdhury (SUCI), and independent candidate Brajalal Debnath, secured limited votes. NOTA also received some votes.In the final results, BJP candidate Johar Chakraborty won by a huge margin with a total of 24,291 votes. CPI(M) candidate secured 6,001 votes, while the Congress candidate got 5,936 votes.

The announcement of each round saw moments of celebration and disappointment among party workers.Speaking to the media after the victory, Jahar Chakraborty said, “This victory is a blessing of the people and a mandate in favor of development. My primary goal is the overall development of Dharmanagar. I will continue to work for the people.” Overall, the Dharmanagar by-election reflected a one-sided contest, with the BJP candidate maintaining a consistent lead from start to finish and securing a decisive victory.
