Guwahati, Assam, 25th of July, 2026 : Press Information Bureau (PIB), Guwahati, organised a District Media Workshop ‘Varta’ at the Conference Hall of the District Commissioner’s Office, Baksa, on Friday (24th July, 2026) to enhance public awareness about the upcoming Census 2027 and highlight the district’s developmental initiatives. Around 35 participants, including media representatives and government officials, attended the workshop.
Delivering the keynote presentation on Census 2027, Ms. Bharati Chanda, Deputy Registrar General of Directorate of Census Operations, Assam, explained the significance, methodology and implementation process of the Census. She emphasised that Census data forms the foundation for government planning and policymaking and urged citizens to cooperate wholeheartedly with the Census exercise by providing accurate and authentic information. She cautioned against furnishing incorrect details, noting that the public are the ultimate beneficiaries of the Census as the data collected guides the planning of welfare schemes, infrastructure development and public service delivery.
Ms. Chanda also elaborated on the two phases of the Census, the use of digital technology and the self-enumeration facility, the confidentiality of personal information collected during the exercise, and the roles and responsibilities of Enumerators and Supervisors. She appealed to all citizens to extend full cooperation to Census officials to ensure the collection of accurate and reliable data.
Highlighting the district’s preparedness for the Census, Ms. Kimnei Changsan, IAS, District Commissioner, Baksa, said that the district is among the leading districts in Assam in terms of preparedness for Phase-I of Census 2027. She informed that extensive training programmes for District and Charge Officers, Field Trainers, Enumerators and Supervisors have already been conducted and that the district is fully prepared for the self-enumeration and house-listing phases as per the Census schedule.
The District Commissioner also highlighted Baksa’s significant progress in the health, education, agriculture and livelihood sectors over the past few years. She spoke about the district’s notable achievements, including receiving the prestigious JRD Tata Memorial Award for its performance under the Aspirational District Programme, hosting the State-level International Day of Yoga celebrations at Salbari, and exporting 20 metric tonnes of ODOP (One District One Product) honey to the United States.
Earlier, Ms. Pavni Gupta, Joint Director, PIB Guwahati, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the importance of the Varta workshop in disseminating authentic and timely information on key Government programmes. Stressing the significance of the upcoming Census, she said the media has a crucial role in creating public awareness, dispelling misconceptions and encouraging citizens to actively participate in the Census by providing accurate information.
