Agartala, Tripura, 15th of January, 2026 : With The Initiative of Darlong community celebrated traditional harvest festival Tharlak Kut at Darchawi, Kumarghat under Unakoti district in Tripura on Thursday (15th January, 2026). In the presence of many distinguished dignitaries Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has inaugurated the Darlong Tharlak Kut festival today.

Addressing at the Darlong Tharlak Kut festival Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said that the State Government has been working tirelessly for the economic, social, and cultural development of the indigenous communities. In the state budget, various projects have been announced for the development of indigenous people. With funds allocated by NABARD, the Government is undertaking work to improve roads and other infrastructure in remote, tribal-dominated areas. Through these initiatives, the socio-economic standard of the indigenous communities is being improved.
CM Dr. Saha said that the State Government is currently playing a special role in including the Darlong community in the list of Scheduled indigenous communities. The Darlongs are far ahead in education and culture. This festival will further strengthen unity and fraternity among the Darlong community.”

“The traditional Tharlak Kut festival is the harvest festival of the Darlong community. Through this festival, the traditional culture and unity of the Darlong community are highlighted and celebrated.”, CM said.
This year, the theme of the Tharlak Kut festival is ‘Wings of Time’.”
Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Minister stated that the Tharlak Kut festival has now been included in the annual calendar of the state government’s Information and Cultural Affairs Department. He stated that the Government has provided maximum compensation in cases where tribal land has been acquired for road construction. In addition, the government is extending financial assistance for the development of tribal communities in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) regions.
“To honor the Maharaja of Tripura, Agartala Airport has been named after Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, and statues of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur have been installed at the airport as well as at Kaman Chowmuhani in Agartala.”, CM Dr. Saha said.

“A government holiday has been declared on 19 August to mark the birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. Twelve tribal-dominated blocks in the State have been identified as Aspirational Blocks. In addition to the regular budget, an extra 10 percent allocation has been provided for tribal development in these aspirational blocks”, Chief Minister said.
He added that with the approval of the state government, so far seven members of the tribal communities in Tripura have been conferred with the Padma Shri award for their outstanding contributions in various fields, one of whom is Thanga Darlong. The social allowance for tribal community heads has been increased from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000. To highlight and recognize the historical ethnic identity of tribal communities, several places have been renamed. Owing to the positive role played by both the central and state governments, permanent rehabilitation arrangements have been made in the state for Bru refugees.

Highlighting on the occasion of the Tharlak Kut festival Chief Minister said that Members of the NLFT and ATTF have been persuaded to surrender along with their arms and have been brought back into normal life. Hostels for tribal students have been constructed in three degree colleges. The daily food allowance in tribal hostels has been increased from ₹55 to ₹80, benefiting more than 34,000 students. Smart classroom facilities have also been introduced in these tribal hostels. Through the PM Janman scheme, during the 2024–25 financial year, development work related to safe drinking water, housing, electrification, education, healthcare, roads, and other infrastructure has been carried out for more than 65,000 Reang tribal families in the state, at a cost of ₹322 crore.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha also added that indigenous people are not merely a community; they are the foundation of culture and identity. He added that the state government is committed to the welfare of tribal communities and to ensuring and upholding their rights.
Addressing the gathering at the event, Tinkhuma Darlong, President of the Darlong Inme Inzom, delivered a speech. He informed that MLA Bhagaban Chandra Das has provided an ambulance to the Darlong Inme Inzom organization from his MLA Area Development Fund.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, along with other dignitaries, visited the exhibition stalls displaying the lifestyle, food habits, and traditional attire of the Darlong community as part of the festival. In the evening, cultural event were presented on the event stage.

Amidst the distinguished dignitaries there were Hon’ble Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy, Secretary of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department Dr. P. K. Chakraborty, Unakoti District Magistrate & Collector Dr. Tamal Majumdar, Sudhambika R, Superintendent of police, Unakoti, MLA Bhagaban Das, Unakoti Zilla Saha-Sabhadipati Amalendu Das, and may other distinguished dignitaries were present in the event.
