Dharmanagar, Tripura, 20th of June 2026 : A court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh in connection with a major cannabis trafficking case involving the seizure of more than 560 kilograms of ganja. The verdict in the widely discussed case registered at Churaibari Police Station in North Tripura was delivered on Thursday (18th June, 2026).

According to the case details, on November 15, 2022, police personnel at the Churaibari Naka Check Post intercepted a goods-laden truck during a routine inspection. The West Bengal-registered vehicle was travelling from Tripura towards Assam. During questioning, the statements of the two occupants, Sezarul Sheikh and Kulsad Sheikh, appeared inconsistent, prompting a more thorough investigation. Subsequently, in the presence of a magistrate and senior police officials, the truck was searched.
Police recovered 84 bundles of cannabis concealed in various hidden compartments of the vehicle. Upon weighing, the total quantity seized was found to be 560.6 kilograms.A case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and an investigation was launched. After forensic examination confirmed the seized substance as cannabis, a charge sheet was submitted before the court.
Following a prolonged trial, the court found accused Sezarul Sheikh guilty and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1 lakh. In default of payment, he will have to undergo an additional two months of imprisonment.Meanwhile, the second accused, Kulsad Sheikh, has been absconding since being released on bail. The prosecution stated that separate legal proceedings against him will continue. Both accused are residents of Murshidabad district in West Bengal.
