Court Orders Five-Year Jail Term Along With A ₹50,000 Penalty For A Motorbike Rider.

Sabroom, Tripura, 30th of May 2026 : According to the case details, a road accident was reported on the Sabroom–Agartala National Highway-8 on December 30, 2022. At around 5:30 PM, Kirti Chakraborty, a teacher of Michael Madhusudan Dutta College, Sabroom, was hit from behind by a motorcycle while walking with her husband near Chaturdebata Bari. The motorcycle was allegedly driven by Gautam Das, a resident of Das Palli, Dumduma Shastri Colony.

After receiving information about the incident, personnel of the Sabroom Fire and Emergency Services immediately rushed to the spot and transported the injured woman to Sabroom Sub-Divisional Hospital. After providing preliminary medical examination and treatment, doctors on duty declared Kirti Chakraborty dead.

On receiving the report of the accident, Sabroom Police rushed to the spot and initiated legal proceedings by registering a case and commencing an inquiry. After examining 19 witnesses during the trial, the Additional Sessions Judge of Sabroom Sub-Division, Shri Asit Debnath, delivered the judgment today, sentencing motorcycle rider Gautam Das to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹50,000. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment, the court ordered.
