Diabetes And Mental Health: The Overlooked Connection.

Spread the love

Hyderabad, Telangana, 22nd of August, 2025 :  Olive Sarvodaya Hospital organized a Health Awareness Seminar to address one of the most challenging but less discussed aspects of diabetes care – its deep connection with mental health. The session was led by Dr. Viquasuddin, Consultant Physician, shared his extensive clinical experience and stressed the importance of holistic patient care.

Speaking at the seminar, Dr. Viquasuddin highlighted that diabetes management is no longer confined to controlling blood sugar levels and adhering to medication schedules. “Every patient with diabetes bears an unseen burden, unspoken anxiety before doctor visits, stress of daily monitoring, and the exhaustion of constant self-care. For many, this is combined with depression and stigma and can significantly affect quality of life,” he said.

The seminar drew attention to how younger patients face social challenges, feeling “different” from peers, while older patients often experience burnout after years of living with the condition. Dr. Viquasuddin emphasized that mental health must be treated with the same urgency as physical symptoms. “Diabetic management interrogates more than precision – it requires human connection. Addressing anxiety, depression, and stigma alongside glucose control allows patients not just to survive, but to live healthier and more fulfilling lives,” he added.

Past and Present Context
Twenty years ago, diabetes in India was perceived to be essentially a lifestyle-related metabolic disease. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) estimates that there were approximately 26 million people with diabetes in India in 1995. Today, the numbers have crossed 100 million cases (ICMR–INDIAB study, 2023). In the midst of this surge, a significant proportion of those who suffer, according to studies, are among the 1 in 4 diabetic patients who also struggle with a form of anxiety or depression.

In this fast paced life of today, where we can see the correlation among diabetes and mental health can never be overlooked. Urbanization, excessive time at work, less physical activity and loneliness are all making things worse. According to Dr. Viquasuddin, with great strides in medical technology, diabetes care truly needs to include mental health professionals, the role of the family, and an open relationship between patients and the healthcare provider.
