Dispute Over Fare And Goods Transport Leads To Alleged Assault On Businessman.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 13th of July 2026 : Tension prevailed at Noyapara Motor Stand in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, on Monday at around 11:00 a.m. following allegations that a businessman was assaulted and robbed of his mobile phone and wallet during a dispute over passenger fare and carrying goods. The incident also disrupted traffic in the area for some time.The complainant, Shovom Deb (35), son of the late Swapan Deb and a resident of Ward No. 1, South Kadamtala, runs an electrical goods shop in Kadamtala Market. On Monday, he had come to Dharmanagar to purchase supplies for his business.

According to Shovom Deb, after completing his shopping he went to the Noyapara Motor Stand to return to Kadamtala. There, he got into an argument with drivers of high-speed electric auto-rickshaws. He alleged that the drivers refused to allow him to carry his electrical goods in the vehicle, despite his willingness to pay an additional fare for the luggage.When he began recording the incident on his mobile phone, several auto-rickshaw drivers allegedly became aggressive and attacked him. He claimed that he was beaten up and that his mobile phone and wallet were snatched during the assault.To save himself, he managed to escape and sat on the main road in front of the motor stand, staging a protest and demanding justice. His protest temporarily disrupted traffic, causing congestion in the area.

Later, following the intervention of local residents, he withdrew the protest. Police from Dharmanagar Police Station reached the spot, gathered details of the incident, and took the complainant to the police station. Representatives of the auto-rickshaw drivers’ association were also asked to appear at the police station.Following the incident, Shovom Deb demanded a fair and impartial investigation and strict legal action against those responsible. He alleged that such incidents have raised serious concerns about public safety and created fear among ordinary citizens.

Police stated that an investigation has been initiated based on the complaint and that appropriate legal action will be taken after the inquiry is completed.
