Dharmanagar, Tripura, 21st of July 2026 : With the objective of strengthening North Tripura’s handloom, handicrafts, and sericulture sectors and creating new opportunities in national and international markets, a District-Level Consultative Programme on “Textiles for Global Markets” was held on Monday (21st July, 2026) at the Ardhendu Bhattacharjee Memorial Hall in Dharmanagar.
The programme was organized by the Department of Handloom, Handicrafts & Sericulture, Government of Tripura, with support from the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.The programme commenced at 11:30 a.m. and was inaugurated by Dharmanagar MLA Jahar Chakraborty as the Chief Guest. Special guests included Aparna Nath, Sabhadhipati of the North Tripura Zilla Parishad; Yadav Lal Nath, MLA of Bagbassa Assembly Constituency; Ajit Shukla Das, Additional Secretary and Director of the Department of Handloom, Handicrafts & Sericulture, Government of Tripura; Mitali Rani Das Sen, Chairperson of Dharmanagar Municipal Council; along with senior departmental officials, handloom weavers, sericulture farmers, handicraft artisans, and members of various Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Discussions focused on the present status, future prospects, and strategies for making Tripura’s traditional textile and handicraft products more competitive in the global marketplace.The speakers emphasized the need for adopting modern technology, improving product quality, developing innovative designs, strengthening branding, expanding digital marketing, and increasing export opportunities to enhance the global acceptance of Tripura’s traditional handloom and handicraft products. They also highlighted the importance of skill development for artisans, greater government support, and wider market access.
An interactive session was held with artisans and weavers to understand their challenges, opportunities, and support requirements. The participants also discussed various government initiatives, the use of digital platforms, and strategies for building a self-reliant and sustainable textile sector.According to the organizers, the district-level consultative programme marks a significant step toward connecting North Tripura’s traditional handloom, handicrafts, and sericulture industries with international markets. It is expected to expand market opportunities for local products while generating employment and contributing to the region’s economic growth.
