Agartala, 29th of June, 2024 : With the initiative of Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Planning (Statistics) Department, Government of Tripura observed National Statistics Day at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan, Agartala on Saturday (29th June, 2024). In the presence of many dignitaries Hon’ble Tribal Welfare, Handloom, Handicrafts & Sericulture, Statistics Minister Bikash Debbarma inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.

18th Statistics Day celebrated nationwide on 29th June 2024 on the theme “Use of Data for Decision-Making”. National Statistics Day is commemorated annually to honor the significant contributions made by Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics and economic planning. Often hailed as the ‘father of Indian statistics,’ Professor Mahalanobis is renowned for developing the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure utilized to determine the disparity between a point and a distribution.

Addressing at the observance of National Statistics Day, Hon’ble Tribal Welfare, Handloom, Handicrafts & Sericulture, Statistics Minister Bikash Debbarma said that the Department of Finance and Statistics has an important role to play in the collection and dissemination of data. Planning and implementation is not possible without information. Initiatives have been taken to modernize the Statistics Department. New office building is being constructed. At present there are statistics department offices in 4 districts of the state. Statistics office will be opened in other districts as well. The Statistics Minister said that the country still remembers with respect the planning approach of eminent scientist and Padma Vibhushan Adardee Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.

Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Planning (Statistics) Department a blood donation camp was also organized on this day to celebrate Statistics Day. 34 officers and employees of the department donated blood in the blood donation camp. In the beginning of the programme the Tribal Welfare, Handloom, Statistics Minister and present guests paid floral tribute on the portrait of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.

On the occasion, Hon’ble Tribal Welfare, Handloom, Statistics Minister Bikash Debbarma unveiled two books. In today’s programme apart from the the Tribal Welfare, Handloom, Statistics Minister, Rabindra Reang Director of Census Department, Arup Kumar Chanda, Additional Director of Economics and Statistics Department, officials and many other dignitaries were present in the programme.
