First Female District & Sessions Judge Sankari Das Appointed As LR & Secretary, Law, Government Of Tripura.

Agartala, Tripura, 26th of September 2025 : For the first time in the State’s history a female District & Session Judge has been appointed as LR and Secretary, Law of the State. Bishwajit Pande, Registrar General on behalf of the Tripura High Court issued a list of transfer and posting orders of 9 Grade-I Officers of Tripura Judicial Service on 25 September 2025, whereby Smti Sankari Das, District & Session Judge of Sepahijala District has been transferred as LR and Secretary, Law of the State. In her service life, Smti Das has recorded twice – being appointed as District & Session Judge and now as Secretary, Law for the first time as female in both cases in the State’s history. She will be replaced in the post of District & Session Judge, Sepahijala, by the existing Law Secretary Mr. Sanjay Bhattacharjee. As per the same order the District & Session Judge of West Tripura Shubhasish Sharma Roy has been transferred as the Director of the State Judicial Academy.

Sources in the Law Department said that Sankari Das , daughter of Late Professor Subhash Das, had graduated with honours in physics and then acquired her LLB degree before joining practice as a lawyer in court at Agartala. But she had become a judicial officer after clearing TJS Gr-III examination with credit and then worked as Judicial Magistrate in various places including Bishalgarh and Sabroom. Subsequently she had become Family Court Judge in Gomati District by promotion. She was later posted as District Judge, Khowai and again Family Court Judge in Kailasahar before being upgraded to the post of District & Session Judge, Sepahijala District. Her posting as the Secretary, Law of the State marks a shift in judicial postings in the State and has been welcomed by legal circles as well as by all others connected with the legal matters of the State. Smti Das has also contributed periodically to leading law journals of the country and has authored at least two books on legal and constitutional matters.
