Agartala, Tripura, 5th of August, 2025 : In a significant stride toward strengthening fishery-based livelihoods under the World Bank-funded Tripura Rural Economic Growth and Service Delivery Project (TRESP), the Department of Fisheries, Government of Tripura, has taken a proactive lead in implementing field-level activities—especially across ADC (Autonomous District Council) areas.

Demonstrating its strong commitment to scientific and technology-driven planning, the department has adopted GIS (Geographic Information System) technology to identify and assess suitable fishery zones in remote villages. This approach marks a major advancement in ensuring data-backed decision-making for the formation of Producer Groups (PGs).
To drive this initiative, a state-level training-cum-demonstration programme was conducted on 4th August 2025 at the Directorate of Fisheries, Gorkha Basti, in collaboration with the Tripura Space Applications Centre (TSAC). The event was led by Mr. Samar Roy, Nodal Officer (Fisheries), TRESP, and Mr. Bishorjit Hijam, Fisheries Specialist, PMU.
TSAC experts, Mr. Singhajit Naorem and Mrs. Basanti Tripura, conducted technical sessions for District Fisheries Managers, Cluster Coordinators, and technical teams from all TRESP-covered districts, focusing on the practical use of GIS tools in fishery planning.
The highlight of the event was a field-level geo-tagging demonstration at Phai Kwtal Producer Group in Mandwai Block, showcasing how satellite imagery and digital mapping can be used to identify fishery ponds, evaluate water retention structures, and monitor aquatic resources over time.

This strategic intervention comes in response to challenges faced in some ADC villages where the lack of suitable ponds has delayed PG formation. The Fisheries Department is now actively working to identify alternative villages that meet the required fishery parameters, ensuring that TRESP targets are met without compromising quality.
With robust coordination between district and block-level TRESP teams, the Fisheries Department is operating in mission mode—paving the way for accelerated implementation, surplus production, and improved profitability for producer groups. The use of GIS technology further ensures transparency, efficiency, and scientific rigor in the project’s rollout.
