Mumbai, Maharashtra, 13th of August, 2026 : This Independence Day, the message of freedom is taking on a new and environmentally conscious dimension. Refiber, an initiative operated by Ottery, has launched the ‘Freedom from Unused Clothes’ campaign, urging citizens to turn unused clothes lying at home into valuable resources. Beginning on August 15, citizens will be able to book a doorstep pickup of old clothes through the Refiber app. The collected clothes will then be directed for reuse, recycling and further processing.
Refiber’s Mumbai Textile Circular Economy Demonstration Project has laid a strong foundation for the campaign. Through the project, 2.7 tonnes of used clothing were collected. A total of 275 collection orders from 257 citizens were fulfilled through a network of 15 laundry partners operating across 28 branches.
According to Shrikant Bhangariya, Chairman, Refiber Initiative, “The Mumbai experience has demonstrated that systematic collection of textile waste at scale is possible with the support of technology and existing service networks. Our aim is to take this model to other cities across the country.”
Meanwhile, Manoj Vanwari, COO of Ottery and Refiber, said, “Collective participation from citizens, industry, government and sustainability organisations is essential to building textile circularity.” Supported by TISER, CMAI, UNIDO and Lions International, the initiative marks an important step towards taking the learnings from Mumbai to communities across India.
