Agartala, Tripura, 29th of July 2025 : In a significant step to strengthen the rural economy and empower tribal women farmers, the Horticulture Department of Tripura has launched the use of GIS (Geographic Information System) technology under the World Bank-supported TRESP project.

This initiative is part of a broader mission-mode approach by the Agriculture Department, inspired by the proactive leadership of Dr. K. Sashi Kumar, Secretary, Tribal Welfare Department, and Dr. P.B. Jamatia, Director, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Department.
A one-day training on GIS Mapping was organized on July 29 at the State Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation. Officers working under TRESP across 23 tribal-dominated blocks participated in the session. The training was conducted by GIS Specialist Singhajit Naorem and expert Basanti Tripura.

The event was coordinated by Joint Director Manoj Debbarma and Agriculture Expert Subrata Shiv.
With GIS mapping, it will now be easier to monitor the implementation of TRESP activities, track the spread of modern agricultural practices through Farmer Field Schools, and provide real-time support to women-led Producer Groups.
Participants also received field-based practical training. Initial geo-mapping data from all 23 blocks will be submitted within a week.
