Dharmanagar, Tripura, 8th of March, 2026 : The illegal liquor trade is reportedly increasing day by day in the Panisagar area of North Tripura, raising serious concerns among local residents. Despite administrative surveillance, the unlawful business continues to operate, leading to growing resentment among the public.According to allegations, liquor is being o penly sold from morning till late at night at several rice hotels along the Assam–Agartala National Highway, stretching from Chamtilla to Panitilla. In many cases, it is alleged that these establishments are using their hotels as a cover to run the illegal trade.Locals claim that within nearly 200 meters of Panisagar Police Station, illegal liquor is easily available in several hotels, restaurants, and small betel and snack shops. It has also been reported that some sellers even provide home delivery services to customers.
Residents have alleged that despite the presence of the police and intelligence units in the area, no effective action has been taken to stop the illegal activities. Though occasional raids are carried out, locals claim these are merely symbolic and have little real impact. As a result, the illegal liquor trade continues to expand unchecked.
People in the area fear that the easy availability of liquor is pushing many young individuals toward addiction. They also claim that other anti-social activities such as drug abuse and gambling are increasing in the locality.
Some residents have also raised questions about the long-standing presence of intelligence officials in the area and possible links that may be allowing the trade to continue. In this situation, locals have demanded administrative reshuffling in the concerned departments.
According to social activists, the widespread illegal liquor trade is extremely harmful to society and poses a major threat to public health while also contributing to a rise in crime. It is noteworthy that earlier a legal liquor shop in the area had been shut down following objections from the local MLA. However, despite this, the illegal sale of liquor has reportedly increased, making the situation even more alarming.Residents have now strongly demanded that the administration take immediate and strict action to curb the illegal liquor trade. All eyes are now on what steps the authorities will take in response.
