Mumbai, Maharashtra, 6th of June 2026 : Following extensive engagement by IVPA along with other industry associations, the government has introduced a SOP for the reintroduction of standardised edible oil pack sizes.

The milestone policy change will mark a definitive end to fractional, non-standard retail packaging, establishing a new era of market transparency in the edible oil ecosystem.

The unified advocacy campaign was led by the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA) along with other associations.

The SOP aims to improve transparency, make price comparison easier for consumers and support fair trade practices.

The move will put a lid on predatory packaging practices and help buyers to confidently evaluate prices.

Mr. Sudhakar Desai, President of the Indian Vegetable oil Producers’ Association (IVPA), stated, “We thank the government for the consultative approach to solve this long-pending issue confronting the industry. While the non-standardisation was done to give freedom to the industry, however, for over three years, this practice has distorted the market leading to proliferation of such packs creating widespread confusion in the marketplace.”

“This move will restore structural sanity to retail shelves and level the playing field.”

The industry’s unified stance, backed by swift government action, serves as a benchmark for how public-private collaboration can successfully protect public interest while driving regulatory clarity, Desai added.
