In the presence of many distinguished dignitaries Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.

Addressing at the Media Workshop Cum Orientation Programme Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said that in a democratic system, the roles of the judiciary and the media are of immense importance. These two pillars play a decisive role in ensuring that power is not misused.

Chief Minister stated that the media is the fourth pillar of democracy. Article 19(1) of the Indian Constitution clearly states the freedom of the press. Without press freedom, the entire social system is adversely affected. The judiciary and the media play a unique role in maintaining a connection with the people and contributing to social change.

Highlighting on the event, the Chief Minister remarked that in a democratic system, the media acts as a watchdog. If there is corruption, injustice, or any wrongdoing in society, the media brings it to light with courage and strength. If the Government deviates from its entrusted responsibilities, the media exposes it before the public. He also stated that in today’s era, the responsibilities of journalists have increased significantly. Society expects a lot from journalists. If it is found that a government is not fulfilling its duties properly, the role of the media is to point it out clearly and hold it accountable.

The Chief Minister said that the present State Government strongly believes in the freedom of the press. The current Government is carrying out all its work with complete transparency. Necessary actions are being taken regularly based on reports published in newspapers. He mentioned that every fortnight, high-level meetings are held to review media reports, and district magistrates as well as concerned officials are instructed to take appropriate measures. Due to this regular and transparent review process, many problems are being resolved easily.

The Chief Minister stated that, in the interest of the people, the State Government will continue this task monitoring system. Referring to the past incidents where two journalists were killed in the state, he said that the government is constantly monitoring the progress to ensure that justice for those murders is delivered swiftly.

In the welcome address, Director of Information and Cultural Affairs Department Bimbisar Bhattacharya stated that seven resource persons will speak on various topics during this three-day workshop.
