Dharmanagar, Tripura, 6th of May 2026 : The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), a nationwide body representing medicine traders, has called for a countrywide strike on Wednesday, May 20. In this regard, a press conference was held on Wednesday, May 6, at the TGTA building near Dharmanagar Boys’ Club, organized by the association’s officials.Present at the press meet were Dharmanagar and Kanchanpur divisions Secretary Subrata Saha, and President Prantus Sen, along with several other members of the organization and local retailers.

As part of the preparations for the strike, awareness campaigns have already begun in various places, including Dharmanagar.According to the organization, their three primary demands are: a complete ban on online sale of medicines, an end to excessive discounts offered by corporate entities (deep discounting), and strict action against counterfeit or spurious drugs. They also pointed out that during the COVID-19 pandemic, on March 26, 2020, the central government had permitted doorstep delivery of medicines to tackle the crisis.

However, they allege that e-pharmacies are now misusing that provision to expand their business, and they have demanded the withdrawal of that directive. The national leadership of AIOCD believes that online and corporate-controlled pharmaceutical trade poses a serious threat to the survival of small and medium chemists. The All Tripura Chemists and Druggists Association of Dharmanagar and Kanchanpur divisions has extended support to the strike.Regarding emergency services on the day of the strike, officials stated that a decision will be taken during a crucial meeting with the Deputy Drug Controller on May 11.
