Agartala, Tripura, 15th of July 2025 : One of the key ways to eliminate thalassemia is by raising awareness and practicing caution. Timely diagnosis and treatment also play a crucial role in combating the disease. This was stated by Chief Minister Dr.Manik Saha while inaugurating a seminar on thalassemia organized by the Rotary Club of Agartala at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan. In his address, the Chief Minister said that such seminars help in increasing public awareness about thalassemia. If other social organizations like the Rotary Club come forward, public awareness regarding this disease will grow further. He emphasized that there is no reason for patients with thalassemia to feel helpless. If detected early, the disease can be significantly prevented.

“Thalassemia is generally of two types: Alpha and Beta. Patients severely affected by the disease require regular blood transfusions. Bone marrow transplantation is an effective treatment for this condition. The state’s health department is considering introducing bone marrow transplant services in the near future to enhance healthcare. Under the Bal Seva Yojana, the health department also plans to provide treatment services for thalassemia patients.” Chief Minister added.

The Chief Minister also added that World Thalassemia Day is observed globally on May 8 every year to spread awareness about the disease. India has approximately 70,000 thalassemia patients and around 42 million carriers. Every year, nearly 10,000 to 12,000 children in the country are born with severe beta-thalassemia. In Tripura, there are currently about 2,858 thalassemia patients. Therefore, it is crucial to start awareness campaigns from the school level to eliminate the disease.

Amidst the distinguished dignitaries there were Rotary Club of Agartala President Kishalay Ghosh, Director of Health Services Dr. Tapan Majumder, and Dr. Kameshwar Singh Elambam from the Rotary Club, Dr. Anjan Das, Director of Family Welfare and Preservative Medicine, and Padma Shri awardee Dipa Karmakar. The seminar also featured an open quiz on thalassemia for students from different schools.
