Dharmanagar, Tripura, 27th of January, 2026 : In line with nationwide protests, bank employees in Dharmanagar of North Tripura district on Tuesday held a strong agitation demanding the introduction of a five-day banking system. The protest was organised at the call of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), with employees from various public sector bank branches in Dharmanagar actively participating. From the morning, bank employees staged demonstrations in bank premises and at important locations across the town, holding banners, festoons and placards.

The protesters raised the slogan, “We Demand Five-Day Banking.”The agitating employees alleged that an understanding has already been reached with the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) regarding the implementation of a five-day banking system, and recommendations have also been made for its execution. However, due to the absence of final approval from the Central Government, the decision has not yet been implemented. As a result, bank employees claimed they have been facing an increasing workload and mounting pressure for a long time.
Addressing the gathering, bank union leaders stated that the introduction of a five-day banking system would help maintain a healthy balance between professional and personal life. It would significantly reduce mental stress among employees and enhance overall efficiency. They further pointed out that improvement in the working environment of employees would directly reflect in better customer service, which would ultimately benefit the general public.

The leaders also mentioned that many countries across the world have already successfully implemented a five-day banking system. Despite repeated assurances in India, the issue has not yet been realised, forcing bank employees to take to the streets. They strongly demanded immediate approval from the government for the implementation of five-day banking. A notable presence of employees and officers from the State Bank of India branches in Dharmanagar was observed during the protest. Through slogans and demonstrations, they voiced their demands and warned that if the issue is not resolved at the earliest, more widespread and stricter agitation programmes would be launched across the country in the coming days.
