Hyderabad, Telangana, 21st of April 2026 : For 53-year-old Ramarao, the symptoms didn’t seem serious enough to worry about. A persistent cough. A vague discomfort in the upper abdomen. Nothing that felt urgent. Like many, he chose to wait it out. Weeks passed. The discomfort lingered.

When he finally walked into CARE hospital, Hitech City, expecting medication for a routine gastric issue, the diagnosis came as a shock, cancer at the gastroesophageal (GE) junction, a difficult to detect form of stomach cancer that often presents with subtle, non-specific symptoms.
Responding swiftly, the surgical gastroenterology team performed a complex robotic-assisted surgery using the Da Vinci Surgical System, enabling precise removal of the tumour in a challenging anatomical region and ensuring a stable recovery.
Mr. Subrahmanyam, a known case of hypertension and diabetes, underwent a total (complete stomach removal) gastrectomy with jejunostomy under general and epidural anaesthesia. The surgery was performed by the team led by Dr. N. Karunakar Reddy, Senior Surgical Gastroenterologist along with Dr. Mustafa Hussain Razvi, Senior Surgical Gastroenterologist and Team.
The procedure involved removal of the tumour along with the affected portion of the stomach, followed by reconstruction of the digestive tract through oesophagojejunostomy and jejunojejunostomy. Doctors noted that tumours at the GE junction are particularly complex due to their location between the oesophagus and stomach, requiring precise surgical planning and reconstruction. Additional steps, including omentectomy and placement of a feeding jejunostomy, were carried out to support post-operative recovery. Surgical drains were placed as part of standard protocol.
The patient’s post-operative course was uneventful. He was managed with appropriate medical care, including intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and pain management. Following clinical improvement, he was discharged in a hemodynamically stable condition, with advice on diet and follow-up care.
Dr. N. Karunakar Reddy, Surgical Gastroenterologist, CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, said, “Cancers at the gastroesophageal junction are particularly challenging, as symptoms are often vague and easily overlooked, leading to delayed diagnosis. Many patients present at an advanced stage, making treatment more complex. This case underscores the importance of not ignoring persistent symptoms such as ongoing discomfort or unexplained cough. With timely diagnosis and advanced surgical care, including the use of the Da Vinci robotic system, we are able to achieve excellent outcomes. The technology allows us to operate with greater precision in narrow, difficult-to-reach areas that are often not easily accessible through conventional laparoscopic surgery.”
Mr. Nilesh Gupta, Zonal Chief Operating Officer, CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, said,
“This case reflects the importance of early clinical intervention and the strength of a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach in managing complex cancers. At CARE Hospitals, we are continuously strengthening our clinical capabilities and infrastructure to ensure patients have access to advanced, timely care when it matters most.”
Doctors note that gastrointestinal cancers are among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in India, with many cases diagnosed at advanced stages due to the absence of clear early symptoms. Awareness and timely medical evaluation are critical to improving survival and reducing treatment complexity.
The case reflects CARE Hospitals growing capabilities in advanced gastrointestinal oncology and complex surgical interventions, supported by a multidisciplinary approach and structured post-operative care.
Today, Mr. Subrahmanyam is back home, recovering steadily, his journey a reminder that what feels routine can sometimes be life-threatening, and that timely medical attention can change the course of a life.
