Tireless Work Underway To Achieve Self-Sufficiency In Milk, Meat, And Egg Production: ARDD Minister Sudhangshu Das At Assembly.

Agartala, Tripura, 29th of August, 2026 : Over the past three years, a total of 51 veterinary centres and primary veterinary centres across the state have been renovated, and 5 primary animal hospitals have been upgraded to veterinary dispensaries. This information was provided in the state Assembly by Hon’ble Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das, in a written reply to a question from MLA Swapna Das Paul on Friday (28th August, 2026). He said the department has various plans for infrastructural development in animal husbandry. These include plans to build sub-centers, dispensaries, and animal hospitals through the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund. In addition, with funding from the NEC (North Eastern Council), there are plans to set up farmer training centers, develop and establish farms, build hospitals, and create slaughterhouses and livestock-product centers. At the same time, under Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), there are plans for bio-security systems, critical care units, a feed analytic lab, a blood bank for animals, and construction of government housing.

In a written reply to another question from MLA Jitendra Majumder, Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das said the Animal Resources Development Department is working tirelessly to achieve self-sufficiency in milk, meat, and egg production. Work is underway on a roadmap to achieve targets for the next five years, aimed at developing Tripura’s rural economy and creating employment for unemployed youth. The minister said that in terms of per-capita availability of milk, Tripura is currently the second-largest milk-producing state in Northeast India. To achieve self-sufficiency, work is being done on artificial insemination of cattle, nutritional security for newborn calves, improved treatment and disease-prevention systems, dairy and cattle life insurance, and modernization of processing infrastructure.

The minister said Tripura has already achieved self-sufficiency in the meat sector and, in terms of per-capita availability, ranks second among the northeastern states. Artificial insemination of pigs has been introduced to increase meat production over the next five years. Pigs and goats are being distributed under various schemes. An insurance scheme has been introduced, a World Bank-funded project is in operation, and medical services are being brought to farmers’ doorsteps.

Regarding eggs, the minister said that in terms of per-capita availability, Tripura is the largest egg-producing state in Northeast India. Improved breeds of ducks and chickens are being distributed to boost egg production. Government farms are being upgraded, brooder houses are being built, bank-facilitated financial assistance is being provided to set up large-scale private commercial farms, and better systems for disease treatment and prevention are being implemented. The Animal Resources Development Department will continue working over the next five years toward self-sufficiency in egg production and export.
