Tragic Incidents At Dharmanagar Ratha Yatra: 19-Year-Old Trisha Bhowmik Dies Suddenly, Child Injured After Chariot Spire Collapses.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 17th of July 2026 : The joyous atmosphere of the sacred ISKCON Rath Yatra festival in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, turned into one of grief and concern on Thursday (16th July, 2026) after two tragic incidents occurred during the grand procession. A 19-year-old woman, Trisha Bhowmik, died suddenly while participating in the Ratha Yatra, while a child aged around two years sustained serious injuries after the wooden spire of a chariot collapsed.

According to reports, Trisha Bhowmik, a resident of the Rail Gate area of Dharmanagar, had joined thousands of devotees in the Rath Yatra procession. She suddenly fell ill during the event, prompting people nearby to rush her to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Dr. Hirak Debnath of Dharmanagar District Hospital said that the exact cause of death could not be confirmed immediately. He stated that the cause would only be known after the post-mortem examination report is received. Trisha’s untimely death has left her family, relatives, local residents, and fellow devotees in deep mourning.This year marked the first-ever Ratha Yatra Carnival in Dharmanagar, jointly organized by the Dharmanagar Municipal Council and various government departments. The celebration featured beautifully decorated chariots, colorful processions, devotional music, and chants of “Jai Jagannath,” drawing thousands of people from all communities along the route from Kali Dighi to Central Road. Local MLA Jahar Chakraborty described the event as a new symbol of communal harmony and cultural unity in Dharmanagar.

However, another unfortunate incident occurred during the procession. According to eyewitnesses, the main chariot of Dharmanagar Kalibari struck overhead electric wires with its tall wooden spire while passing in front of the Netaji statue near the southern bank of Kali Dighi. The impact caused a heavy portion of the spire to break off and fall onto the head of a child standing below.Panic spread immediately after the accident. The bleeding child was quickly rescued and taken to Dharmanagar District Hospital by members of the public.

Hospital sources said the child is currently undergoing treatment. The sudden death of Trisha Bhowmik and the serious injury to the young child cast a shadow over what was intended to be Dharmanagar’s historic first Ratha Yatra Carnival. The twin tragedies have left the entire town in mourning and concern. Residents are now awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of Trisha’s death while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured child.
