Khowai, Tripura, 30th of August, 2026 : In the Gournagar area under Khowai R.D. Block, allegations have surfaced of obstruction soon after the construction of a road, being undertaken under the Public Works Department (PWD) at an estimated cost of around ₹4 crore, began. Residents of Gournagar had been suffering from road-related problems for nearly 40 years. Naturally, locals were delighted when, after a long wait, the PWD finally awarded the work for construction of a new road in the area. However, soon after the work commenced, the situation reportedly turned tense yesterday following adverse remarks made by a section of local residents.

Local residents alleged that a group of around 30 to 40 people from another area obstructed the road construction work, raising questions about the quality of the construction. They further alleged that the group threatened to stop the road construction work.

Meanwhile, several local residents of Gournagar, including former Pradhan and current Deputy Pradhan Bibhas Sinha, claimed that the road construction work is progressing properly. According to them, the construction of the new road under the Public Works Department has been underway in the area for the past few months, and local residents are satisfied with the quality of the work.

According to local residents, a group of miscreants from another area arrived at the site yesterday while the road construction work was underway and allegedly pressured the workers to stop the work. At the time, the Deputy Pradhan and several other local residents had reached the spot and were discussing various aspects of the road construction. However, during the discussion, some of the miscreants allegedly damaged the reinforcement rods of the roadside wall and broke some pipes. The incident reportedly left the workers engaged in the road construction shocked.

The incident spread, local residents gradually began gathering at the spot. According to the allegations, sensing that the situation was getting out of control, the accused persons left the area and fled the scene shortly afterwards. The incident has created tension in the Gournagar area. Local residents said that people in the area have suffered immensely due to the lack of a proper road for nearly 40 years. After many years, the road construction work has finally been sanctioned under the initiative of the state government. Therefore, they have urged that the construction work should not be obstructed in any way.

Local residents further stated that if anyone has any complaint or objection regarding the road construction, it should be brought to the notice of the administration and the concerned department. However, they said that obstructing the construction work or damaging government property cannot be accepted under any circumstances. The residents of Gournagar have urged the administration to intervene promptly to ensure that the road construction is completed smoothly while maintaining the prescribed quality standards.
