Dharmanagar, Tripura, 23rd of April 2026 : Serious allegations of irregularities in a drain construction project have sparked tension in Ward No. 2 of Paschim Tilthai Gram Panchayat, under the Jubarajnagar Assembly constituency in Dharmanagar subdivision of North Tripura district. A major discrepancy between the information displayed on the project signboard and the actual ground reality has triggered strong resentment among local residents.According to the allegations, an amount of ₹1,22,748 was sanctioned for the construction of a drain from the residence of Amar Nath to that of Churamoni Nath.

The signboard also mentions over 290 labour days under the scheme. However, local MGNREGA workers claim that not a single labourer has been engaged in the project over the past decade. This raises serious concerns of mis appropriation of government funds through “paperwork-only” execution. On Wednesday, aggrieved workers brought the matter to the attention of local MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath. Shocked by the complaint, the MLA conducted an on-site inspection and publicly expressed his outrage.

“This is not an isolated incident but a sign of a larger pattern of corruption. We are receiving complaints of similar irregularities from multiple gram panchayats across the state. Unscrupulous elements are depriving workers of their rightful wages and siphoning off government funds,” he said.He further emphasized the urgent need for strict action against such malpractice and called for a prompt, impartial investigation to identify the culprits and ensure legal punishment. He also raised serious questions about the role of the administration in allowing such irregularities to persist.Meanwhile, anger among local residents continues to grow.

They allege that for years, funds have been embezzled under the guise of project implementation without any actual work being carried out. With the issue now in the public domain, demands for swift and decisive administrative action have intensified.Notably, if these allegations are proven true, the issue may not remain confined to a single panchayat. It could raise broader concerns about transparency and accountability in the implementation of rural development projects across the state. All eyes are now on the administration to see how quickly and fairly the investigation is conducted and whether concrete action follows.
