BIS Seized Spurious Toys in chennai.

New Delhi, Delhi, 7th of May, 2026 : A team of officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, carried out a series of Enforcement Search and Seizure operations on 06 May 2026 at the following three establishments in Sowcarpet, Chennai: (1) M/s Ambika Stores, 63, Narayana Mudali Street, Sowcarpet, Chennai; (2) M/s Mahaveer Enterprises, 40, Narayana Mudali Street, Sowcarpet, Chennai; and (3) M/s Shetrapal Impex, 1st Floor, 43, Bagawan Complex, Rattan Bazar, Chennai. These establishments were found to be storing and selling toys and related products without ISI Mark in violation of the provisions of the relevant Quality Control Orders. The operations were carried out under the provisions of Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, with the protection of police personnel from C1 Flower Bazaar Police Station, Chennai. The Enforcement Operations were conducted based on complaints received by BIS.

During the operations, BIS officials found several TOYS including BALLOONS intended for children’s use, being stored and offered for sale without the mandatory BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark), without a valid BIS Licence Number.

Around 2870 Packs of Balloons and 3000 numbers of different types of toys were seized during the Search and Seizure operations carried out at the above three establishments. These products fall under mandatory BIS certification as per the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020, wherein toys cannot be manufactured, imported, stored, sold, offered for sale, distributed or exhibited without a valid BIS licence and Standard Mark (ISI Mark).

Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, stated that BIS conducts regular market surveillance and enforcement activities to safeguard consumer interests and ensure that products placed in the market conform to prescribed Indian Standards relating to safety and quality. He emphasized that the ISI Mark signifies conformity to Indian Standards after due testing and inspection under BIS certification schemes and helps protect consumers, particularly children, from unsafe and substandard products. He further stated that violation of Quality Control Orders, Sale or Storage of products without mandatory BIS certification are serious offences under the BIS Act, 2016. BIS shall continue taking strict enforcement action, including seizure and prosecution, against violators to ensure compliance and consumer safety.

BIS will initiate action against the offenders under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The offence is punishable with imprisonment up to two years or a fine not less than ₹2,00,000, which may extend up to ten times the value of the goods, or both, under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016 depending upon the nature of the offence committed.

Consumers are advised to verify the authenticity of ISI Mark, Hallmark and CRS registration details before purchasing products covered under mandatory certification. Consumers may verify BIS licences and registrations through the BIS Care App, BIS portal or by scanning QR codes, wherever applicable. Complaints regarding misuse of ISI Mark, Hallmarking violations, or sale of non-certified products may be lodged through the BIS Care App or by email to cnbo1@bis.gov.in.
