Dharmanagar, Tripura, 13th of June 2026 : Amid the intense summer heat in North Tripura, a severe drinking water crisis triggered protests and a road blockade in the Ramnagar area of Panisagar on Saturday. Residents of Wards 5 and 6, who have been suffering from an acute shortage of water for nearly a month, took to the streets in anger, disrupting traffic for a considerable period.

According to local sources, regular drinking water supply to the two wards has remained suspended for the past month.Residents alleged that when they open their taps, only air comes out instead of water. Despite repeatedly informing the concerned department and local representatives, no permanent solution has been provided. Frustrated by the prolonged crisis, local women staged a protest carrying empty pitchers and buckets. One aggrieved woman resident said, “We have not received water for almost a month. When we approached the water supply operator, we were told that the machine was out of order. We also informed our public representatives, but no action was taken. In this situation, where are we supposed to go?”
Residents further claimed that the area has been facing water supply issues for nearly three months, but the situation has become particularly severe over the last month. The protesters directed their allegations primarily at the water supply operator and officials of the Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) Department.
According to locals, authorities repeatedly cite “machine failure” as the reason for the disruption, yet no effective steps have been taken to resolve the issue permanently. Although the administration has been supplying water through tankers, residents expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the water. They alleged that the water provided is dirty and contaminated, making it unfit for drinking. As a result, people are facing immense hardship amid the scorching heat and the lack of safe drinking water.
The protesters also accused public representatives and departmental officials of showing complete indifference toward their plight. They expressed anger that despite schemes such as the Jal Jeevan Mission, ordinary citizens are being forced to take to the streets for access to a single bucket of clean drinking water.Following Saturday’s road blockade and mass protest, residents of Wards 5 and 6 are now looking to the administration for immediate and effective measures to resolve the crisis.
