Another Journalist In The State Alleges Assault, Harassment, And Personal Attack.

Agartala, Tripura, 3rd of July, 2026 : Journalist Rathish Debnath, a resident of North Majlishpur under the Rani Bazar Police Station in Agartala, was allegedly attacked at his home on June 25 by two individuals, identified as Chandan Debnath and Tapas Majumdar.

According to allegations, the accused are involved in illegal drug trafficking in the area. Local sources claim that after reports of the alleged narcotics trade surfaced, the journalist had begun gathering information for a detailed news report. It is alleged that, in retaliation, the two men went to his residence, assaulted him, and subjected him to harassment.

The Journalists’ Development Union of Tripura extended its support to Rathish Debnath following the alleged attack. On Friday, members of the organization visited his home in North Majlishpur to gather details about the incident and stand in solidarity with him.

A formal complaint has already been lodged with Rani Bazar Police Station regarding the alleged attack. The delegation also visited the police station to seek an update on the case registered against the accused and held discussions with police officials on the progress of the investigation.

The delegation demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and appealed to the police to provide adequate security for journalist Rathish Debnath. The Journalists’ Development Union of Tripura also sought prompt and impartial action in the matter.

The Journalists’ Development Union of Tripura has expressed concern over what it described as a growing number of incidents involving attacks and harassment of journalists in the state in recent times.

In response to these developments, the organization appealed to the administration to guarantee a safe and unbiased atmosphere for media personnel, enabling them to work without fear or pressure.
