“Called Him ‘Dada’, Told To Say ‘Father’ Instead!”: Doctor At GB Hospital Accused Of Humiliating Patient, Sparks Statewide Outrage.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 7th of August, 2026 : Is this a reflection of the deteriorating state of public healthcare, or an example of a doctor’s misuse of authority? A serious allegation of humiliation and mistreatment of a critically ill patient has triggered widespread outrage across Tripura.

The controversy erupted at Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GB Hospital), the state’s premier government medical institution. According to the complaint, a young patient was allegedly humiliated simply for addressing a doctor as “Dada” (a respectful Bengali term meaning “elder brother”).

The incident gained massive attention after a video related to the allegation went viral on social media. The patient claims that instead of receiving medical treatment, he was allegedly told by the doctor:

“Why did you call me ‘Dada’? Call me ‘Father’. Address me as ‘Sir’ and touch my feet to seek forgiveness; only then will you receive treatment.”

The complainant, Afzal Hossain, a resident of Dharmanagar in North Tripura district, had reportedly visited GB Hospital for medical treatment. According to his allegations, after he politely addressed the doctor as “Dada,” the doctor became angry and allegedly insisted that he address him as “Father” and apologize by touching his feet. Otherwise, he would not receive treatment.

Fearing for his safety and deeply disturbed by the doctor’s alleged behaviour, Afzal said he left Agartala and returned to Dharmanagar. He later visited Dharmanagar District Hospital, where he consulted local doctors to verify whether the medicines prescribed at GB Hospital were appropriate.

Speaking to journalists, Afzal recounted his experience. He further alleged that during the conversation, he mentioned working in a government complex frequently visited by senior officials, including the District Magistrate. In response, the doctor allegedly claimed that he was “more important than all those government officers.”

The allegations have raised serious concerns among the public regarding patient dignity, professional conduct, and accountability in government hospitals. Many have expressed shock that a medical professional—often regarded as a “second God” in society—could allegedly behave in such a manner toward a patient.

The viral video and the patient’s allegations have sparked widespread debate across the state. It now remains to be seen whether the state Health Department or the government will initiate an inquiry and take action against the accused doctor.
