Special Lecture On “Humanism And Education In Sanatan Dharma” Held At BBM College.

Agartala, Tripura, 16th of September, 2026 : A special lecture programme on “Humanism and Education in Sanatan Dharma”, with reference to the Indian Knowledge System, was organised by the Department of Philosophy and Sanskrit, Bir Bikram Memorial College (BBMC), Agartala, in association with Nikhil Tripura Mahanam Sevak Sangha, Bishalgarh Branch, at the Conference Hall of BBMC on Tuesday (15th September, 2026).

The programme featured Srimat Bandhugourab Brahmachari Maharaj, Secretary, Mahanam Sampradaya, India, as the Chief Orator. The programme commenced with felicitation of the guests, ceremonial lighting of the lamp and offering of Pushparghya to the portrait of Dr. Mahanambrata Brahmachariji followed by Vande matram song.

The welcome address was delivered by Smt. Mrinal Dasgupta, HOD, Department of Sanskrit, followed by an address by Dr. Rupak Das, Secretary, Teachers’ Council, BBMC, and a speech by Sri Mithun Roy, Secretary, Nikhil Tripura Mahanam Sevak Sangha, Bishalgarh Branch. A Mahanam Sangeet was presented by Smt. Kanika Bhowmik.

In his special lecture, Srimat Bandhugourab Brahmachari Maharaj highlighted the humanistic values embedded in Sanatan Dharma and their relevance to education, character building, social harmony and holistic development. He emphasised the importance of integrating ethical and spiritual values with education for creating responsible and compassionate citizens.

Srimat Bandhugourab Brahmachari Maharaj highlighted the concept of the five ṛṇas (debts/obligations) of human life as reflected in the Indian tradition—Deva ṛṇa (obligation towards the divine and nature), Rishi ṛṇa (debt to sages and teachers for knowledge), Pitṛ ṛṇa (obligation towards parents and ancestors), Manushya ṛṇa (responsibility towards fellow human beings and society), and Bhūta ṛṇa (responsibility towards all living beings and nature). He emphasised that human life becomes meaningful when these obligations are recognised and fulfilled through responsible conduct and service.

Addressing the students, Maharaj urged them to translate these values into their everyday lives through discipline, honesty, respect for parents and teachers, compassion for fellow citizens, environmental responsibility, self-control and a spirit of service. He stressed that education should not merely provide academic knowledge or career opportunities, but should build character and create responsible, ethical and compassionate citizens.

Dr. Mihir Pal, Principal, BBMC, also addressed the gathering and underlined the importance of Indian Knowledge traditions in contemporary education. Dr Pal called upon the students to become disciplined, socially responsible and value-oriented young Indians who contribute positively to the nation and uphold the ideals of humanism, harmony and universal brotherhood.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Smt. Sanjita Rani Das, HOD, Department of Philosophy, followed by the National Anthem.

The lecture provided an enriching platform for students, teachers and members of the community to reflect upon the enduring values of humanism, education and universal brotherhood in the Indian intellectual tradition.
