Chief Minister Of Tripura Dr. Manik Saha Attends 40th Foundation Day Celebration Of Tripura University.

Agartala, Tripura, 2nd of October, 2026 : With a humble beginning with a limited departments, Tripura Central University is today playing a significant role in the education, research and knowledge sector of the state. We have continue our efforts collectively to develop this university into a prime centre of education and research in the entire North-East region. Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said this while speaking at the celebration of 40th Foundation Day of Tripura University at its Maharaja Bir Bikram Satabarshiki Bhavan. At the event Chief Minister felicitated the Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman as an alumni student of this university.

Addressing on the occasion, the Chief Minister said, the four decades of Tripura University’s journey is an integral part of the evolution of higher education in Tripura. Tripura University was established on October 2, 1987. Through a Parliamentary bill this university attained the status of a Central University in July 2007. The Chief Minister said, apart from celebrating its 40 years, we have fix the target for the next four decades. He hoped that this university, with national and international cooperation, producing entrepreneurs and expansion of internal research works, will someday turn into a prime centre of innovation and research in the North-East.

Chief Minister said, education should not be limited to gaining knowledge, but it should be a medium for character building, developing responsible and service-minded citizens adding that the rich cultural heritage, vibrant tribal society, bio-diversity and unique geographical and environmental features of Tripura have created ample avenues for research. At the same time initiative should be taken to create coordination between industry and education, inter-departmental research, innovation, entrepreneur and educational cooperation at the national and international arena.

The Chief Minister said, a University does not just create opportunities for learning, it also needs to associate that knowledge with resolving problems of the society. In the context of the initiatives taken by the state government for the expansion of higher education the Chief Minister said, since 2018 seven new government degree colleges have been established in the state. These are – at Old Agartala, Panisagar, Ambassa, Kakraban, Karbook and Women’s Degree College at Nalchhar and Sri Arabindo General Degree College (English Medium). The Women’s College at Nalchhar started functioning from the 2026-27 academic session. Acts have been passed to upgrade the Agartala Women’s College into Tripura Government Women University and Tripura Institute of Technology into a University of Technology.

The Chief Minister said, alongside expanding higher educational infrastructure, participation of private institutions is also on the rise. In the context of providing assistance to the students, Chief Minister said, during the last one year under Chief Minister’s Special Scholarship, scholarship was provided to 20 Divyangjan (blind) students. Some scholarships were also given to other beneficiaries, bringing the number of total scholarship recipients to 12. Scooty is being provided to meritorious girl students under Mukhya Mantri Kanya Atmanirbhar Yojana. Nearly 140 girl students have benefitted under this scheme.

Regarding recruitment to the government degree colleges the Chief Minister said, in the first phase 74 Assistant Professors were recommended by TPSC for recruitment. Recruitment to 126 more posts is under process. In addition five Principals have been appointed and approval has been received for creating 200 more posts of Assistant Professor. Examination centres for various competitive examinations are being established in Agartala, Udaipur, and Ambassa.

In regard to the achievement in the implementation of National Education Policy 2020, the Chief Minister said, the NEP has been implemented in the colleges and universities of the state from the 2023-24 academic session. Importance is being given to skill upgradation and innovation. General degree course has been launched at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education, Kunajaban and College of Teachers Education, Kumarghat. The Institute of Advanced Studies in Education, Kunajaban has introduced B.Sc. in Computer Science from the 2026-27 academic year. The Chief Minister also made reference about the ongoing infrastructure development projects in this sector, like the works at MBB College, Netaji Subhash College in Udaipur, TIT and National Law University. Other development activities include construction of new classrooms, smart classrooms, research laboratory and hostels for students at different educational institutions of the state. Infrastructure development works are ongoing under Pradhan Mantri Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) at several government degree colleges.

During the 2026-27 academic year, academic buildings, administration building and library have been approved for Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar College in Belonia, Karbook Degree College, and academic building has been approved for Ramthakur College in Agartala. The Chief minister said that these investments are not being made only for the sake of building infrastructure, but to realize the dreams of the new generation. He also deliberated on AI, digital technology, new employment opportunities etc. He said, despite the technological advancements, the main base of education will remain same. He urged the students to focus on learning, skill and character. He advised them to not only strive for professional success, but also to become responsible citizens.

While speaking as an alumni of the University, Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman recollected his student life. He said, this university is a symbol of aspirations of the people of the state.

At the event MoU was signed between the Tripura University and five organizations including Bandhan Bank, Assam University, Devi Ahalya University and Pahle India Foundation. Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and other staffs were felicitated for their remarkable contribution to the University. The Chief Minister honoured these contributors. Among others who spoke on the occasion were Chancellor of Tripura University Ahmed Javed, VC of Assam University Prof Rajeev Mohan Pant, VC of Devi Ahalya University, Indore, Prof. Rakesh Kumar Shil and MD of Bandhan Bank Chandra Shekhar Ghosh. A documentary on Tripura University was also screened on the occasion.
