Agartala, Tripura, 28th of March 2025 : Tripura is utilizing unused water bodies to increase fish production. In the financial year 2024-25, the Fisheries Department has rehabilitated 58,966 hectares of unused water bodies across the state and started fish farming in them. This information was given by Hon’ble SC Welfare, ARD, Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das address in the state assembly on the 6th day at Tripura Legislative Assembly, Agartala, Tripura on an urgent public interest notice brought by MLA Swapna Das Pal during the reference period.

The Fisheries Minister said that a study has shown that Tripura has the highest number of people who eat fish, where 99 percent of the population eats fish. In Tripura, 2783 kg of fish is consumed per capita every year. So naturally, the demand for fish in Tripura is very high. He said that currently the demand for fish in Tripura is 1,17,28,746 metric tons per year. The fish production is 85,805.68 metric tons per year, which means there is a deficit of 31,48178 metric tons. This deficit is being met by importing fish from other states and neighboring countries. The Fisheries Minister said that the Fisheries Department is working by adopting various plans to meet the fish deficit. Under the Chief Minister’s Fisheries Development Scheme, regular renovation of ponds, water bodies, etc., soil testing, and assistance is being provided to fish farmers with various materials.
