Ayurvedic Intervention Initiative To Control Anaemia Among Girls : Sarbananda Sonowal

New Delhi, 26th of February, 2024: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal along with the Union Minister of Women & Child Development & Ministry of Minority Affairs, Smriti Irani stood witness as the Memorandum of Understanding was signed for a Joint Public Health initiative for Anaemia control among adolescent girls through Ayurvedic interventions in the final five shortlisted districts of India including Dhubri in Assam.

The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Ayush and the Ministry of Women and Child Development under “Mission Utkarsh” here today. The other four districts are Bastar in Chattisgarh, West Singbhuma in Jharkhand, Gadchiroli in Maharashtra and Dhaulpur in Rajasthan.These districts were identified as the poor-performing districts across the country, where average prevalence of anaemia is approximately 69.5%, based on malnutrition indicators especially nutritional anaemia in women of reproductive age group (WRA) based on the National Family Health Survey-5. Through this collaborative initiative, the Government is aiming to improve nutritional outcomes, particularly by empowering women and children with knowledge and resources for optimal health and nutrition outcomes.This project will cover approximately 10,000 Anganwadi centres in the five districts.

Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Mission Utkarsh launched by our Hon’ble Prime Minister of India is a major initiative to ensure Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in health from the aspirational districts are met. Through this joint collaborative initiative, the Narendra Modi government is aiming to address the menace of Anaemia which is largely prevalent among adolescent girls in these  identified districts. This project is aimed at leveraging evidence-based Ayurveda interventions to cater the health & nutritional needs of anaemic adolescent girls.”

This joint initiative focus on promoting wellness through Yoga protocols, fostering diet diversity, and addressing anaemia prevention, especially among adolescent girls in these districts. Through initiatives like Poshan Vatikas and Ayurveda interventions, the government will ensure access to nutritious food and promote healthy lifestyles. Since 2018, the two ministries are working together within the framework of the POSHAN Abhiyaan which has yielded profound benefits for our nation’s health and nutrition landscape.
Adding further, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Under the inspiring leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the government is working towards creating healthcare solutions for the people of our country to live healthier and enjoy a better quality of life. To achieve the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modiji of a Swastha Bharat, we must address health issues like Anaemia through Ayurvedic system of medicine, which has proven it’s efficacy in treating it effectively. Ayush, which has been leading a global movement of wellness, has become an elixir of good health and mind as it working closely with the modern medicine to provide a holistic patient care solution for an enriched quality of life.”

The MoU signing ceremony was also attended by the Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Indevar Pandey; the Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha; the Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Dr Rajiv Bahl; theOSD, MWCD,Anil Malik; the National Professional Officer of Nutrition from WHO, Dr. Rachita Gupta; among other officials of MoWCD and Ministry of Ayush (MoA), as well as officials from the five identified districts and other dignitaries.
