Khowai, Tripura, 11th of February, 2025 : Many years ago the traditional festival ‘Bagher Sinni‘ is back in Sonatala under Khowai district. The traditional festival ‘Bagher Sinni’ is celebrated the month of Magh in the Bengali calendar. This vibrant cultural practice, deeply rooted in folklore, once again fills the chilly nights with music, dance, and joy.

Dressed in strange costumes, wearing the obligatory tiger masks, teenagers roam from house to house, singing the song, ”Tiger Coming…….” this symbolic song, accompanied by harmonium, drums and cymbals, they knock on doors late at night, bringing both entertainment and memories. Families give rice, pulses, coconuts or money as gifts, while tiger-themed performances captivate both children and adults. A similar tiger festival is organized at the Sonatala Kali Temple.

According to locals, this tradition originated in hill villages to avoid tiger attacks during night patrols. Over time, it has evolved into a unique cultural festival. Through its revival in Khowai, the tigers are reconnecting the Sinni communities with their heritage. On this day, a visit to the Sonatala Kali Temple sees the locals come together to sing and play. A grand feast is also organised for over 500 people.
