Khowai, 21st January 2024 : The Child Protection Unit of the district stopped the illegal marriage of a minor girl in Khowai. The minor girl was handed over to the District Child Welfare Committee. The incident took place on Saturday in Srinagar area of West Singicherra Panchayat under Khowai Police Station. The minor girl was supposed to be married to a boy from Lalchara, Khowai on Monday. As per rules, the marriage of a girl before the age of eighteen (18) years was illegal. It is clearly mentioned in the existing law. According getting information, the staff of the District Child Protection Unit went to the home of the minor girl in Srinagar area of West Singicherra Panchayat under Khowai District.
The staff of the Child Protection Unit confirmed the truth of the information by talking to the family members. Then the staff of the Child Protection Unit were able to make them understand that it is illegal to marry a child before the age of eighteen years in accordance with the guidelines of the law. After that, the minor girl’s marriage was canceled by the concerned family members.
The staff of the Child Protection Unit brought the minor girl from home to the district Social Welfare and Social Education office and handed her over to the District Child Welfare Committee. Deputy Director of the District Social Welfare and Social Education department Sujit Das, Deputy Collector of Sub-divisional administration Kishore Debbarma and Women Police personnel participated in the operation.
