Consumers And Employees Take To The Streets In Dharmanagar Against Privatization Of Electricity Services.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 25th of August, 2026 : The Dharmanagar Divisional Committee of the ‘Electricity Consumers and Employees Welfare Association’ organized a protest rally and mass sit-in on Monday, demanding an end to the privatization of electricity services, withdrawal of increased electricity tariffs, and cancellation of prepaid smart meters.

The rally began in front of the TGTA office and proceeded to the Electricity Department office, where a protest meeting and mass sit-in continued for nearly two hours. The meeting was presided over by the organization’s president, Subhash Chandra Roy.

CITU State Committee Vice-President Amitabha Dutta, the chief speaker, alleged that increases in tariffs, duty charges, fuel charges and fixed charges were placing an additional financial burden on ordinary consumers. He also demanded the withdrawal of smart meters, correction of problems in the prepaid system, and reinstatement of the old digital meters.The meeting also demanded an end to the privatization of electricity generation, transmission and distribution, withdrawal of the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025, regularization of contractual and outsourced workers, filling of vacancies, implementation of service rules, and compensation and rehabilitation for employees affected by workplace accidents.

Krishak Sabha State Committee member Ratan Roy and MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath also addressed the gathering. The speakers warned of a larger statewide movement if the demands are not addressed promptly.
